The Empire Waist Dress: We Want to Look Plus Size and Fabulous…not Pregnant!

Ever feel like you look pregnant in a plus size dress? A lot of empire-waist dresses if they hit in the wrong place can make your belly look big and honestly, it’s not your body but the dress. The reason for this is that traditional maternity dresses are almost always styled with an empire waistband on top and a lot of fabric below to accommodate a pregnant belly. While this is cute and charming on a pregnant woman, we plus size girls need to avoid this look. But don’t completely disregard the empire-waist dress. It’s a big trend for Fall 2011 and there is a way to wear one and not feel like a blimp. Empire waistbands that are seamed, color-blocked, ruched, pleated and wider will not gather above the belly but will work to hide any flaws at the waistline and also lengthen the torso. Empire waist dresses with surplice necklines will also help to create a longer silhouette and also accentuate the bust. This will draw eyes upwards and balance out proportions better. Most designers of plus size dresses including Jessica London take all of this into consideration when creating their plus size dresses so you can have confidence in the empire waist trend and never worry that someone will ask you, “when are you due?”
